CONTENT DISCLAIMER!!! * WEBSTER DEFINES NEGUS AS king —used as a title of the sovereign of Ethiopia* (sources http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/negus?show=0&t=1310138253) WE @ DROPPINGJAWS.COM ARE AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY ORGANIZATION WE ONLY USED THIS TERM AS A FORM OF CREATIVE EXPRESSION.
While in the mist of an intense brainstorming session a Mc Donald’s radio commercial aired. As the radio ad blasted out the speakers the storyline consisted of a male with an urban under tone acting out an monologue depicting an conversation that he was having with his significant other. During the course of the conversation the male is stating the things that he would give up in order to keep his Mc Donald’s chicken nuggets by the end of the commercial he rather get married rather than give up his “McNuggets”. Ok ok yeah is this puffery ??? Yeah we @droppingjaws.com think choosing to get married instead of giving up your chicken nuggets is very unbelievable and even unfathomable in some regards. (Side note if he gets married doesn’t that mean she entitled to half of his McNuggets among other things ???)
That’s enough about that commercial’s storyline ,the reason for conversation was several droppingjaws division members felt that McDonald’s is blatantly targeting African American consumers. A few minuets into the conversation it was brought to the division attention that McDonald’s have been targeting African American consumers for years now the only thing that has changed is the awareness of the consumer. Below are a couple of ads by McDonald’s geared directly toward African Americans from over 20 years ago :
With this in mind McDonald’s has always been big on market research and always used advertising agencies that were geared towards African Americans when addressing this demographic. African-Americans are the largest minority segment of the U.S. television household population, comprising approximately 13 percent of the 109.6 million TV households.African-Americans, in general, watch more television than the “All Other” (according to http://www.nielsenmedia.com/ethnicmeasure/african-american/indexAA.html) With this type of staggering information out there you can see why McDonald’s have fixed their sites on the African American consumer. Now many of their commercials are smothered with racial undertones and cultural exploitations but the fact of the matter is that is if the African Amercian McDonald customers make their voices heard and threatening to take their $ 1 Trillion dollar buying power else where, only then McDonald’s will lay off of the insulting ads. The Selig center reported that the U.S. Black buying power has risen from $318 billion in 1990, to $590 billion in 2000, to $799 billion last year, and will rise to $1.1 trillion in 2011 – a 237 percent increase in 22 years.
